Articles on Buffett the Surfer
There’s a picture of surfer dude Buffett on the cover of this week’s Hampton Style Magazine. The magazine features an article about “Veteran” (as in older, not military service) Montauk surfers. Jimmy is one of several “vets” who are featured in the article. There’s also a picture of his surfer van. (thanks to Joe for passing that along to us).
Update: a link to the complete article and photos of Jimmy is now available: “The Boys of Endless Summer“.
Another article mentions Jimmy has been spending time at the Surf Lodge in Montauk: “Buffett’s Island hideaway
Has Jimmy Buffett found a new northern Margaritaville? The singing sailor has been spending an awful lot of time in Montauk’s new Surf Lodge, sipping - wait for it - margaritas and hanging with pals. Just don’t ask him to take his shirt off. When we asked him if he ever goes topless, he almost lost his salt shaker. “That’s a f– stupid question,” he railed. “I’m 60 years old. No, no, no, no, no!”
Buffet did reveal to us that he has had his share of summer flings, but we will have to wait at least another 30 years to hear about them. “Of course, I have had a few,” he told us. “But I’d never tell you about it. When I’m 90, I’ll tell all.”

Parrot Heads Hear Call of Margaritaville
Buffett on Buffett: 'I made people smile'
The original Parrothead: Jimmy Buffett combines singing and storytelling for his faithful fans.
By Robert Davis, USA TODAY
Jimmy Buffett shares his view of the world through music, books and casual conversations with strangers. USA TODAY bounced some questions off the troubadour on behalf of his fans. MORE: Parrotheads hear call of Margaritaville
Q: What are you going to do when you retire? What could possibly be as much fun as performing?
A: As long as I can remember the words and not go flat, I will still sing. I look at Harry Belafonte and (Frank) Sinatra in the late ages, and there is a magic on that stage that very few people get to experience. I'm going to enjoy every day.
Q: What do you want the world to remember about you? A: I made people smile, and I was lucky enough to live the American dream. Q: Where have you seen the most beautiful sunset? A: That is a great question. There are sunsets in the Caribbean that are just about as pretty as anywhere else. Any place the sun melts into the water is OK with me, but probably the Caribbean and Hawaii.
Q: What size boat do you have?
A: I have a small sailboat that I can singlehand. I like to sail by myself. I had envisioned that my children would love to go sail with me, but as teenagers, that ain't happening. So I have a little 9½-meter sailboat. And the big boat (125 feet) just keeps getting bigger. If you're into boats, you're always looking for something bigger and better. I am a victim of that, and I'm still looking.
Q: What have you learned about marriage? A: Have low expectations and you will be OK. Q: What is it like having teenagers at 61?
A: I don't feel like I'm 61, the way I perceived 61 when my parents were 61. I think I'm in better shape and I'm not as grown up as they were, so that helps. The kids are like people now. They're pretty much well on their way. You have to let them be who they are going to be. You can encourage them and be there for advice and things of that nature, but when you get into adolescence, they make their own decisions.
Q: What have you learned about loss?
A: I've had a lot of it. I lost my parents and my best friend in the same year, and I lost a couple of good friends recently. The older you get, it seems to be in your life more. I try not to default to talking about who died and what ailment I have from getting old, because that seems to be where everybody goes. Call it escapism or whatever. I try not to dwell on it.

Where is Margaritaville? Parrot Head Songs in Google Earth
Jim is a self-described ParrotHead; a Jimmy Buffet fan. As a fan of Buffet’s entire catalog, he began to note the geographical nature of the lyrics and titles of the songs. So, for his project, he gathered latitudes and longitudes for each mention of a place in a Jimmy Buffet song. In doing so, though he was not able to pinpoint the exact location of MargarittaVille, he was able to identify the general area. Even though this was something of personal interest to him, he pursued the topic like an academic. Check it out!

The Year of Still Here
Leave it to Jimmy Buffett to come up with just the right name for a 2008 tour by an incredibly popular 61-year-old with millions of Parrothead fans worldwide.
The name: "The Year of Still Here."
Perfect, in a year of economic turbulence and uncertainty.
What a concert it was Saturday night at jam-packed Citizens Bank Park in soggy Philly. We were drenched, but that never matters at Buffett concerts.
In a word it was awesome, as good as any Buffett concert that I've seen, living up to the billing of "The Year of Still Here."
Buffett was delayed by the rain but played late into the night, and I can still hear "Glory Days" in the Philly air and see the fireworks that followed.
There were great versions of all the songs you expect, including personal favorites "One Particular Harbour," "Five O'Clock Somewhere" and of course "Margaritaville."
In short, Buffett is rowing right along, delighting many of us. He's a true treasure, and now I can thank him for "The Year of Still Here."
